There has been a sharp increase in GWSS activity since the last update. The last time counts were this high was in July 2022. Although such an increase at this time of year is not unsual, and is likely due in part to the current heat wave, it is worth keeping an eye on as it may portend continued high sharpshooter activity in the coming weeks
A total of 259 GWSS adults were caught on 49 of the 112 traps deployed. This included seven traps that collected a dozen or more sharpshooters. Four pockets of high GWSS activity are apparent, spread throughout the valley
Relatively high GWSS activity at this time of year is not necessarily a problem, especially for conventionally managed vineyards that received the recommended spring application of imidacloprid
For organically managed vineyards, given the shorter residual effectiveness of products, it is more important to keep an eye on GWSS counts. Continued high counts may suggest one or more treatments may be warranted in the coming weeks
