At the beginning of the year the California Department of Pesticide Regulation (https://www.cdpr.ca.gov/) placed restrictions on the use of neonicotinoid insecticides, the goal of which are to reduce pollinator exposure. This policy change has the potential to impact the use of certain insecticides (e.g., imidacloprid, dinotefuran, thiamethoxam, clothianidin) that are commonly used for the management of arthropod pests in several crops. The following document has information about the new regulations as they relate to berries and small fruit:
It is important to note that because glassy-winged sharpshooter is declared as a quarantine pest by the CDFA, it is exempted from these new regulations. See Section 6990(c) exemption #2 listed near the bottom of the document
In other words, imidacloprid (Admire Pro, Wrangler, Macho) and related insecticides can continue to be used as they have been for GWSS control in vineyards. Obviously, all prior requirements for the use of these commercial insecticides continue to apply, as does the need to carefully follow all label instructions for their use
